Alica Schmidt misses out on a medal at the Paris Olympics
On August 11, the semifinals of the women’s 4x400 meter relay took place at the Paris Olympics. The German team, where Alica Schmidt ran the second leg, finished their performance in seventh place.
In the first semifinal, the German team recorded a time of 3:26.95, beating only the Indian team. The race was won by Jamaica with a result of 3:24.92, followed by the Netherlands, Ireland, and Canada.
Alica Schmidt entered the track after a weak start by Skadi Schier, who failed to hold position among the leaders. Mona Mayer and Aileen Demes completed the relay, but the gap to the top 4 teams proved too large.
This was Schmidt’s debut at the Olympic Games as a main participant. Previously, Alica competed in the mixed 4x400 relay, where the German team also failed to qualify, finishing in seventh place. The athlete noted that running from behind is particularly challenging.
Despite sporting setbacks, Alica Schmidt remains one of the most popular German athletes. Her social media accounts have over 5 million followers, and sponsorship deals with Puma and other brands ensure her widespread recognition.
Alica Megan Schmidt, born November 8, 1998, is a German track and field athlete specializing in the 400 meters. As part of the national team, she won silver in the 4x400 meter relay at the 2017 European Athletics U20 Championships and bronze in the same event at the 2019 U23 European Championships.
In addition to her athletic career, Schmidt also worked as a fitness coach for the Bundesliga football club Borussia Dortmund.
