A tragedy occurred in the center of Mannheim, Germany, during a carnival procession, reports DW.

On Monday, March 3, a car at high speed crashed into a crowd gathered for the "Mad Monday" (Rosenmontag) celebration.

Eyewitnesses reported chaos and panic and saw covered bodies at the scene. Social media users are sharing videos of the incident.

According to official police data, two people died, and 25 others were injured, with 15 in serious condition. Some victims required immediate resuscitation.

The driver was detained immediately after the incident. The suspect's identity and possible motives have not yet been disclosed.

Police describe the situation as "life-threatening" and are conducting a large-scale operation in the city center.

The central square where the incident took place is cordoned off. Law enforcement has blocked all nearby streets, and document checks are being carried out at the city's entrances. A police helicopter is patrolling the area.

The investigation is ongoing, and authorities promise to provide further details soon.
