On Tuesday evening, U.S. President Donald Trump spoke at a joint session of Congress, where he announced his intention to regain control over the Panama Canal.
According to him, this strategically important facility was built by Americans and should remain under U.S. control.
“We did not give it to China, we gave it to Panama, and we will take it back,” Trump said, emphasizing that his administration has already begun implementing these plans.
He added that a major American company had announced plans to acquire both ports located in the canal zone.
Speaking about the strategic importance of the Panama Canal, Trump noted that the U.S. had invested enormous resources in its construction and suffered significant losses.
He also assured that the waterway would remain accessible to everyone, but American interests must come first.
Additionally, the U.S. President touched on the issue of Greenland, stating his support for the right of its residents to self-determination.
“We will ensure your security, make you rich, and give you a Greenland you have never even dreamed of,” he said, addressing Greenlanders, adding that Washington is open to dialogue on this issue.
Earlier, Donald Trump and the Danish Prime Minister discussed Greenland’s future over the phone.
The conversation was tense: Trump aggressively insisted on his interest in the island, but the Danish leader refused to sell the territory, offering only to strengthen cooperation.
Denmark perceived this as a threat and went into "crisis mode."
Washington confirmed that Greenland is strategically important to the U.S. due to China's and Russia's activities in the Arctic.
Denmark is willing to develop military bases and resource extraction but is not prepared to hand over control of the island.
In response, Trump threatened to impose tariffs on Danish goods, including pharmaceuticals.
