The European Union has begun work on the 17th package of sanctions against Russia, announced Anita Hipper, the official spokesperson for the head of European diplomacy, Kaja Kallas.

According to her, the existing restrictions are already having a significant impact on the Russian economy, aligning with Brussels' objectives, reports Interfax-Ukraine.

“Sanctions are working. They are harming the Russian economy, and that is exactly what we aimed for,” Hipper stated at a briefing in Brussels.

She emphasized that the European Union does not intend to ease its pressure and will continue to impose new restrictions.

Since 2022, the EU has unanimously approved 16 sanction packages targeting key sectors of the Russian economy and specific individuals.

However, the further extension of several individual sanctions, set to expire on March 15, is under threat due to Hungary’s stance.

According to Hipper, negotiations on this matter are ongoing, and Brussels is doing everything possible to reach a unanimous decision.

She assured that the European Union does not plan to halt its strategy of sanctions pressure.

As a reminder, in February, on the third anniversary of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the EU introduced the 16th package of sanctions, increasing pressure on Russia’s economy and military resources.

The sanctions list has been expanded to include 83 new entities, including companies and shipowners transporting oil in violation of restrictions.

The sanctions also targeted 13 regional banks and financial institutions using the SPFS system. The EU banned the export of drone and missile-related technologies and revoked the licenses of eight propaganda media outlets.

Earlier, London announced its largest sanctions package against Russia in three years, aimed at military logistics, financial flows, and Kremlin-affiliated elites to weaken Moscow’s capabilities and bolster support for Kyiv.
