New regulations have come into force in Poland, restricting the import of animals and products that could carry foot-and-mouth disease. The information was published on the Polish police website.

The decision was made following the discovery of an infection outbreak in Hungary. As a result, control checkpoints have been set up at the borders with the Czech Republic and Slovakia.

In the Silesian Voivodeship, inspections have been organized at five border crossings in four counties: Cieszyn, Wodzisław, Racibórz, and Żywiec.

At the checkpoints, police officers, border guards, tax administration representatives, and transport inspectors are on duty 24/7.

The main objective is to detect illegal transportation of animals and goods from high-risk zones.

The restrictions were introduced by Poland’s Minister of Agriculture based on recommendations from the European Commission.

According to Silesian Voivode Marek Wójcik, the measures aim to prevent the spread of a dangerous virus that threatens agriculture.

Earlier, it was reported that in West Midlands, UK, the first case of human infection with avian influenza A(H5N1) was recorded, linked to contact with an infected bird on a farm.
