U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin held a phone conversation during which they discussed ending the conflict in Ukraine and the need for long-term peace, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt reported on X.

The conversation took place today, and both leaders noted that the war must end and that their countries' resources should be directed toward the needs of their citizens.

As a first step, they agreed to initiate a ceasefire in the energy and infrastructure sectors and to begin technical negotiations on a maritime truce in the Black Sea.

These consultations will take place soon in the Middle East.

Beyond the Ukrainian conflict, Trump and Putin discussed the situation in the Middle East, emphasizing the need to prevent new wars and limit the spread of strategic weapons.

They also expressed a shared stance that Iran should not pose a threat to Israel's existence.

The leaders highlighted the prospects for improving U.S.-Russia relations, including economic cooperation and geopolitical stability after peace is established.

Earlier, the Kremlin stated that Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump held telephone negotiations discussing a 30-day ceasefire in Ukraine. Putin stated that Russia would consider the proposal if security guarantees were taken into account.

Trump insisted on de-escalation but without halting military aid to Kyiv. The leaders agreed on an exchange of 175 prisoners and the transfer of 23 wounded individuals.

Discussions also included halting strikes on the energy system and ensuring the safety of maritime navigation in the Black Sea. Expert groups will be established to work out the initiatives.

Previously, it was reported that Donald Trump's adviser Mike Waltz stated that in the course of peace negotiations being discussed with Kyiv and Moscow, Ukraine might have to agree to territorial concessions to Russia.
