Dutch cyclist Mathieu van der Poel won the classic E3 Saxo Classic race in Harelbeke, Belgium, but his victory was marred by yet another act of aggression from the crowd.

During his final solo sprint to the finish, a spectator behaved disgracefully and spat at the rider. Despite the incident, Van der Poel stayed focused and crossed the finish line first, beating Denmark’s Mads Pedersen by more than a minute.

The incident drew strong reactions from local authorities. Acting police chief of Ronse, Hans Haustrate, announced that an official investigation had begun: “Such behavior is unacceptable. We will not tolerate this and urge witnesses to help identify the offender.”

The race organizers also condemned the event. Committee representative Jacques Coussens stated: “Our race stands for respect. Spitting at athletes has no place in our event.”

After the race, Van der Poel admitted he hadn’t noticed the attack but commented: “These people shouldn’t come to races. Unfortunately, this keeps happening.”

The issue of fan misconduct in cycling remains a concern — Van der Poel has previously been spat on, had beer thrown at him, and had objects tossed in his path during other events.

Mathieu van der Poel is a unique Dutch cyclist who has achieved top-level victories in three disciplines: road racing, cyclocross, and mountain biking.

He is a multiple-time world champion, winner of legendary classics and Grand Tour stages, and was named Dutch Sportsman of the Year.

The grandson of Raymond Poulidor and son of Adri van der Poel, he continues the family’s cycling legacy.
