South Korean police and customs officers seized a record amount of cocaine on a Norwegian-flagged vessel that arrived from South America at the port of Okgye, south of Gangneung.
The ship arrived for unloading, but during inspection, it raised suspicion among the officers. Several hidden compartments containing bags of white powder were soon discovered.
Preliminary analysis confirmed the substance was cocaine. The cargo is estimated to be worth about 1 trillion won (around $740 million), making it the largest seizure ever in the country.
The operation took place on the morning of April 2, following a tip-off from the U.S. FBI. Ninety coast guard and customs officers met the vessel at the pier and found 50 packages, each weighing 20 kilograms, hidden aboard.
The ship “Lunita” had previously docked in ports in Mexico, Ecuador, Peru, Panama, and China. Reports indicate the drugs may have remained on board throughout the entire journey.
According to customs officials, the seized quantity is enough for 67 million doses. An investigation is underway to trace the drug’s origin and delivery routes.
Customs authorities announced plans to strengthen controls at all seaports.
