Russia launched a missile strike on central Sumy: 21 killed, 83 injured, including children

On Palm Sunday, Russia launched missiles at the crowded center of Sumy. 21 people were killed, including children. A rescue operation and investigation are ongoing.

Updated: According to updated information from the State Emergency Service of Ukraine, the death toll from the missile strikes on the city of Sumy has risen to 24, including one child.

"As of 1:00 p.m., 24 people were killed as a result of two missile strikes on Sumy, including one child. A total of 84 people were injured, seven of whom are children," the SES press service reported on Telegram.

On the morning of April 13, 2025, the Russian army launched a missile strike on the center of the city of Sumy. The attack occurred around 10:15 a.m., during Palm Sunday, when the streets were particularly crowded.

As a result of the strike on residential and public infrastructure, 21 people were killed and another 83 injured, including 7 children, according to the Minister of Internal Affairs of Ukraine Ihor Klymenko.

The victims include people who were in cars, public transport, on the streets, and in their homes.

The powerful explosion destroyed buildings and damaged educational institutions and vehicles.

Rescuers, police officers, and medics promptly arrived at the scene. Emergency assistance is being provided to the injured, and a support center has been set up to receive claims and help victims. Psychologists are working with eyewitnesses and those affected.

The Sumy Regional Prosecutor’s Office has launched a pre-trial investigation under the article on war crimes resulting in civilian deaths.

Employees of the Security Service of Ukraine, investigators, and forensic experts are documenting the consequences of the strike.

President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy, in an urgent statement, called the attack a deliberate act of terrorism.

“A horrific strike on ordinary life… Only scum can act like this — killing during a religious holiday. My condolences to the families. All services are working. The world must respond firmly. Without pressure on Russia, there will be no peace,” he said.
