Germany — Future German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has announced plans to limit the number of new asylum applications to under 100,000 per year.

He made the statement during an appearance on ARD, emphasizing that the country's infrastructure is already overwhelmed.

To reduce the migrant flow, the coalition plans to increase deportations, temporarily suspend family reunification, and push for border rejections.

According to Merz, Berlin is already in talks with neighboring countries and expects support, particularly from Austria.

Merz also mentioned the possibility of tax changes and stated that reforms are needed in pensions, healthcare, and elderly care. He warned that a quick economic recovery should not be expected.

On foreign policy, Merz condemned the Russian missile strike on Sumy and confirmed his readiness to supply Taurus missiles to Ukraine if agreed upon within the EU.

By the end of July, he plans to visit the U.S. to meet with Trump and discuss geopolitical threats.

Earlier, it was reported that on April 16 in Warsaw, Olaf Scholz and Donald Tusk will meet to discuss German-Polish cooperation, key EU policy issues, and current international challenges.
