The National Institute for Public Health and the Environment of the Netherlands (RIVM) has urged citizens to avoid eating home-produced chicken eggs.

The reason is a study conducted at 60 sites, where most egg samples showed dangerous levels of PFAS — persistent chemicals that accumulate in the body and can cause cancer, liver damage, and impairments of the immune and reproductive systems.

At 31 sites, the acceptable limit was exceeded even when consuming less than one egg per week. These eggs come from chickens raised in private homes, backyards, and small farms.

Meanwhile, eggs sold in stores and markets remain safe — they are monitored by the NVWA. RIVM continues to investigate possible sources of contamination, including earthworms eaten by chickens.

Earlier it was reported that Hungarian authorities suspect that a virus outbreak may have been caused intentionally — the investigation is exploring a potential biological attack.

It was also reported that Poland has tightened border controls with the Czech Republic and Slovakia after a foot-and-mouth disease outbreak at a Hungarian farm — inspections are being carried out around the clock.
