OpenAI has started internal testing of a platform that could become its first step into the social media space. According to The Verge, citing sources familiar with the process, the company has developed a prototype featuring a content feed based on AI-generated visuals.
The project has not yet taken its final shape: it remains unclear whether it will be launched as a standalone service or integrated into the existing ChatGPT.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman is sharing the initiative with external experts and collecting feedback on the concept.
If launched, the network could intensify competition with Elon Musk’s X, which already uses its own AI Grok, as well as with Meta, which is building similar features for its assistant.
The new platform may provide OpenAI with a stream of user data needed for model training — unlike its rivals, who already have access to vast social media datasets.
Earlier, ChatGPT introduced the ability to generate images, with the AI now better understanding and interpreting user queries. While generation has become slightly slower, the quality has significantly improved.
