A cable car crash occurred on Mount Faito near Naples, claiming the lives of four people.

The cabin fell in a remote mountainous area, and only by the following morning were firefighters able to remove power lines from the Circumvesuviana railway and begin securing the wreckage, reported the Italian fire and rescue service.

Twenty Vigili del Fuoco personnel are still working at the site.

Among the victims are cable car operator Carmine Parlato (59), Israeli tourist Janan Suleiman (25), British citizen Margaret Elaine Wynn (58), and another man, reportedly also British, whose identity has not yet been released, according to Virgilio.it.

In addition, an Israeli tourist is in critical condition at the Ospedale del Mare hospital in Naples — he was found without identification documents.

Ten people were in a second cabin heading down the mountain. All were safely evacuated.

The Torre Annunziata prosecutor's office has launched an investigation into possible involuntary manslaughter and negligence. Investigators are focusing on the technical condition of the funicular and the weather conditions: on the day of the incident, a strong wind warning and a "yellow" alert level were in effect.

Transport Minister Matteo Salvini called the incident a "horrific tragedy" and demanded an immediate review of all circumstances.
