Canada. On Saturday, April 19, Prime Minister of Canada and Liberal Party leader Mark Carney unveiled his election program, focusing on strengthening national defense.
He pledged to allocate 30.9 billion Canadian dollars for military needs over the next four years.
According to Carney, Canada must defend its sovereignty amid the "expansionist rhetoric" of U.S. President Donald Trump, who, Carney claims, seeks to dominate the Canadian economy and resources.
The plan includes weapons modernization, acquisition of submarines and icebreakers, and strengthening northern presence to counter Chinese and Russian influence.
Carney also promised to raise military salaries, recruit new soldiers, and invest in quantum computing and artificial intelligence.
The foreign policy section of the platform envisions deeper ties with Europe and Asia, as well as using Canada’s G7 presidency to defend the rules-based international order.
It was previously reported that Canada imposed reciprocal trade measures, setting 25% tariffs on certain U.S. automobiles in response to earlier U.S. duties on Canadian goods.
