A new wave of violence against penitentiary staff has been reported in France.
On the night of April 20 to 21, two cars belonging to prison staff were set on fire in the parking lot of Lyon-Corbas prison. However, the most alarming incident was an attack on a private house that was mistakenly believed to belong to one of the guards.
As reported by the union Force Ouvrière – Justice, unknown individuals fired at the house with a 9mm firearm and launched mortars at it.
The attackers left graffiti with the name of a prison employee on the garage, mistakenly believing they were targeting him. In fact, the victim was a neighbor unrelated to the prison system.
The union condemned the attack, calling it cowardly and vile, and demanded immediate security measures for all prison staff.
With a similar statement, Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin spoke out, promising to stand with the victims and provide them with support.
According to him, the attacks are an attempt to pressure the state at a time when it is restoring order in the prisons. He expressed confidence that the police would quickly find those responsible.
Earlier, it was reported that a series of targeted attacks on penitentiary facilities had occurred in France: cars were set on fire, shootings near prison sites were recorded, and threats were made to employees. Authorities believe that the escalation is a reaction from drug cartels to the government’s efforts to restore order in correctional facilities.
