On April 22, the Vatican released the first photographs of Pope Francis lying in an open casket in his residence — the Chapel of Santa Marta.

According to his will, his body was placed not on a bier, but in a simple wooden coffin, unlike the lavish funerals of his predecessors.

Later, the casket will be moved to St. Peter’s Basilica, where the faithful will have the opportunity to say goodbye to the pontiff.

The Camerlengo and three of his assistants will soon destroy the Pope’s Fisherman’s Ring and personal seal to prevent any further use.

Cardinals have already gathered in the Vatican to discuss the date of the funeral and the schedule of mourning events, which will take place over nine days according to church tradition.

As a reminder, on April 21 at 7:35 a.m. local time in the Vatican, Pope Francis passed away. His death was announced by Camerlengo Kevin Farrell.

The pontiff died in his residence Casa Santa Marta. Pope Francis, who led the Church since 2013, was the first Latin American and Jesuit to hold the post.

His pontificate was marked by reforms, defense of migrants, and concern for the poor. The Catholic world mourns and expresses gratitude for his service.

Earlier it was reported that after the announcement of the Pope’s death, Rome authorities immediately activated the Security Control Center and enhanced security measures in the capital — additional police patrols were deployed at the Vatican.
