White smoke over the Vatican: A new Pope has been elected
The conclave in the Sistine Chapel has concluded: the cardinals have elected a new Pope, but his name has not yet been announced — internal ceremonies and formalities are currently underway.
Vatican City. On May 8, 2025, according to Vaticannews, white smoke rose above the roof of the Sistine Chapel in the Vatican — a traditional sign that the cardinals have elected a new Pope. The conclave, which began on May 7, ended with a vote in which one of the cardinals received the required number of votes.
According to established procedure, the senior cardinal or the next in line asked the newly elected pontiff two key questions: whether he accepts the election and what name he intends to take.
After receiving affirmative answers, an official act of election is drawn up.
For now, the name of the new Pope is known only to a close circle. After completing internal formalities, he will appear on the balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica to deliver his first blessing to the world — *Urbi et Orbi*.
Let us recall that on April 21, Pope Francis passed away. His death was announced by Cardinal Kevin Farrell. Throughout his pontificate, Francis consistently defended the interests of the disadvantaged and devoted himself to serving the Catholic Church.
