Incumbent U.S. President Donald Trump firmly rejected rumors of ongoing peace talks with Iran.
In a post on his platform Truth Social, he wrote: “I have not started any ‘peace talks’ with Iran in any form. This is just brazen, fabricated lies and fake news!”
He added that the Iranian side knows how to reach him if they want to talk and reminded that they had missed the opportunity to make a deal that could have “saved many lives.”
Trump also responded sharply to a statement by French President Emmanuel Macron, who claimed that Trump left the G7 summit in Canada for talks about a ceasefire between Israel and Iran.
“Macron, seeking publicity, falsely claimed that I flew to Washington for a ‘ceasefire.’ That’s not true. He doesn’t know why I’m returning, but it’s definitely not because of a ceasefire.
It’s about far more serious things. As always, Emmanuel is wrong. Stay tuned!” wrote the American president.
The statement came amid escalating tensions in the Middle East and expectations of the U.S. position as a key player in international diplomacy.
Earlier, it was reported that G7 leaders issued a strong statement regarding the escalation in the Middle East. They affirmed Israel’s right to self-defense, sharply condemned Iran’s actions, which they believe destabilize the region, and called for immediate de-escalation of the conflict, including a ceasefire in Gaza.
