On Sunday, June 29, a tragedy unfolded near Kenfield Mountain, close to the city of Coeur d’Alene in Idaho, USA.
While responding to a wildfire, a sniper opened fire on firefighters and police officers. Two rescuers were killed, while another managed to report that the team had taken cover behind a vehicle and suspected arson.
As explained by Kootenai County Sheriff Bob Norris at a press conference, the shooter used high-powered sporting rifles and fired from cover in dense brush.
He was well-equipped and prepared. According to officers, shots were fired from multiple directions, possibly indicating more than one attacker.
By evening, a SWAT team discovered the body of a man with a handgun at the scene. Authorities are investigating whether he was the sniper.
Investigators do not rule out that the fire may have been intentionally set to lure emergency responders into a trap.
Meanwhile, the wildfire on the mountain slope continues to rage. The blaze has engulfed approximately 15–20 acres. Due to difficult terrain and the threat of further attacks, rescue crews began active firefighting only late in the evening.
Local residents were warned about possible evacuations and urged to monitor official updates.
