Late Wednesday night, July 2, a burst of automatic gunfire was heard on the busy West Chicago Avenue in downtown Chicago, according to a report by WGN-TV.
Around 11:00 PM, near the Artis Restaurant and Lounge — where a release party for local rapper Mello Buckzz's new album was taking place — unknown individuals drove by in a dark vehicle and opened fire on the crowd.
A total of 18 people were injured — 13 women and 5 men between the ages of 21 and 32. Four people — two men aged 24 and 25 and two women — died at the scene. According to police, three of the injured are in critical condition, while the rest are stable.
Witnesses say they heard a barrage of gunshots and screeching tires. Some police officers transported victims to hospitals themselves without waiting for ambulances. “I heard the shots and immediately knew it was something terrible,” said local resident Ariel.
Chicago police are investigating and searching for the shooters. The motive for the attack remains unknown.
Earlier it was reported that in Minnesota, a man impersonating a police officer carried out an armed attack on the homes of two local Democrats. Representative Melissa Hortman and her husband were killed, while Senator John Hoffman and his wife were seriously injured but survived after surgery.
