Company X closes office in Brazil due to Supreme Court pressure
Company X has ended its operations in Brazil following threats of arrest from Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes, but the platform will remain accessible to users.
On August 17, Company X announced the closure of its operations in Brazil. The reason for this decision was threats of arrest directed at their legal representative in the country by Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes.
The judge, acting under a secret order, demanded that X comply with his censorship orders. The company decided to make this order public to draw attention to the judge's actions.
In a statement, the company said that their numerous appeals to the Supreme Court were not heard, the Brazilian public was not informed about these orders, and X employees in Brazil are not responsible for blocking content on the platform. However, Moraes chose the path of threats, ignoring the law and due process.
To ensure the safety of their employees, Company X decided to immediately cease operations in the country.
However, access to the X platform for users in Brazil will be maintained.
The company expressed deep regret over the forced decision, placing full responsibility for the situation on Justice Alexandre de Moraes.
X believes that his actions are incompatible with the principles of democratic governance, and now the Brazilian people face a choice — democracy or the actions of Alexandre de Moraes.
It should be noted that the Brazilian Supreme Court had ordered social networks Facebook and Twitter (now X) to block the accounts of supporters of President Bolsonaro for spreading disinformation and threats against judges.
Elon Musk, the owner of X, refused to comply with the court's decision, calling it a violation of rights and stating that he would unblock the accounts, even if it leads to fines and the closure of the office in Brazil.
As a result, the Brazilian judge initiated an investigation against Musk for obstructing justice and abusing power to influence public opinion.
