Lucara Diamond Corp. announced the discovery of a 2,492-carat diamond at the Karowe mine in Botswana, confirming the site's status as a global leader in the recovery of large diamonds.
Lucara Diamond Corp. reported an impressive discovery at its Karowe mine in Botswana.
On August 21, 2024, a diamond weighing 2,492 carats was found, making it one of the largest in mining history.
The discovery was made using innovative X-ray Transmission (XRT) technology, implemented at the mine in 2017. This technology allows for the efficient detection and preservation of large diamonds during mining.
The Karowe mine has previously been a source of significant finds. Among other large diamonds discovered at this site are the 1,758-carat Sewelô and the 1,109-carat Lesedi La Rona. These discoveries highlight the unique capabilities of Karowe and strengthen Lucara’s position as a leading producer of large diamonds.
Lucara's President and CEO, William Lamb, wrote that the discovery of such a large and high-quality diamond confirms the correctness of the chosen strategy and the effectiveness of applying advanced technologies.
It is worth noting that the world's largest diamond is considered to be the famous "Cullinan," discovered in South Africa in 1905.
The "Cullinan" weighed 3,106 carats and was cut into several large diamonds, many of which adorn the British Crown Jewels.
