Ukraine initiates emergency IAEA meeting due to nuclear security threats
Ukraine has called for an emergency IAEA meeting on December 12 in response to Russian strikes on critical infrastructure threatening nuclear security.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine reported that the extraordinary meeting of the IAEA Board of Governors will take place on December 12.
According to Andrii Sybiha, the reason for the meeting is Russian strikes on power substations identified as critical for nuclear safety.
The attacks pose a threat to global security. Ukraine is calling for immediate action to prevent escalation and to ensure the protection of key infrastructure.
It should be noted that on the morning of November 29, Russian forces attacked Ukrainian substations that connect nuclear power plants to the energy grid.
According to Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha, the strikes caused power outages and heightened the risk of a nuclear disaster.
The Khmelnytskyi, Rivne, and South Ukraine Nuclear Power Plants temporarily reduced capacity, and one unit at the Rivne NPP was shut down.
Despite damage to the lines, the plants maintained external power. The IAEA called for enhanced security measures, emphasizing the importance of stable energy supplies to cool reactors.
Earlier, it was reported that Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha urged NATO during a meeting in Brussels to take urgent measures, including expanding support for Ukraine and increasing pressure on Russia to raise the cost of its aggression.
It also became known that Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha stated that Russia plans strikes on key Ukrainian nuclear energy facilities, creating a threat ahead of the winter period.
