In the U.S., thousands of reports of drones near military and critical infrastructure are being investigated
Since November 18, approximately 5,000 reports of drones have been recorded in New Jersey. The FBI and other agencies are trying to determine whether there is a national security threat.
Since November 18, 2024, residents of New Jersey have been reporting large numbers of drones spotted near critical infrastructure, including military facilities and power stations, according to the White House.
According to the FBI, more than 5,000 reports have been filed through the hotline and online platform. Despite the ongoing investigation, no concrete evidence of a threat has been found at this time.
FBI personnel, in collaboration with DHS, FAA, and local police, have undertaken large-scale measures: from analyzing video footage to using specialized equipment to track drones.
Out of more than 5,000 reports, approximately 100 have so far been deemed worthy of particular attention. Some of the suspected drones were preliminarily identified as manned aircraft.
To prevent public panic, authorities emphasized that there is currently no evidence linking the incidents to terrorist organizations or foreign states.
Most recorded flights, according to the FAA, occurred within the bounds of existing regulations.
DHS officials reported that temporary flight restrictions have been imposed in New Jersey near particularly important facilities.
Additionally, local authorities have received extra equipment for drone detection and analysis, including radars and infrared cameras. However, no signs indicating malicious actions have been found.
The FBI and other agencies will continue the investigation to rule out any potential threat.
Authorities have also urged Congress to expand powers to counter the illegal use of drones, which would improve coordination between federal and local structures.
Earlier, it was reported that the U.S. Congressional Committee concluded its investigation into the origins of COVID-19, determining that the virus likely resulted from a lab leak in Wuhan, which sparked heated debates and discussions.
It was also revealed that a 7.3-magnitude earthquake occurred off the coast of California, impacting thousands of residents. Authorities declared a state of emergency, launched rescue operations, and issued a tsunami warning.
