The U.S. has announced the launch of a certification program for internet-connected devices called the U.S. Cyber Trust Mark, according to a statement from the White House.

This new initiative aims to enhance transparency in cybersecurity and help consumers make more informed decisions when purchasing smart gadgets.

The program was developed in collaboration with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), which consulted with experts over an 18-month period and approved the certification rules.

Starting in 2025, companies will be able to submit their devices for testing to receive a label confirming compliance with the cybersecurity standards of the U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST).

The program covers a wide range of gadgets, including baby monitors, security cameras, and voice assistants.

Americans increasingly face threats of their devices being hacked, ranging from remote control of security systems to recording personal conversations via unsecured cameras.

The new trust mark will serve as a guide for buyers and an incentive for manufacturers to enhance the security of their products.

Companies like Amazon, BestBuy, and other major players have already expressed support for the program. An Amazon representative noted that such an initiative strengthens consumer trust in smart devices, while BestBuy emphasized the importance of informing buyers about product security levels.

The U.S. Cyber Trust Mark will function similarly to EnergyStar: a simple and clear logo will help buyers quickly determine if a product meets modern cybersecurity standards.

According to Consumer Reports, this labeling will build additional trust in brands and indicate whether manufacturers are committed to supporting their devices with software updates.

Previously, it was reported that Meta has resumed using facial recognition technology to protect Facebook and Instagram accounts, prevent fraud, and block fake ads, starting testing on public figures.

It was also revealed that Microsoft has introduced a Windows App for remotely managing PCs via smartphone and updated Windows 11 to improve compatibility with Android devices.
