The USA is hit by a snowstorm, millions trapped in snow, airports shut down

Southern US states were hit by a rare winter storm: snow, ice, and wind disrupted the lives of 31 million people, resulting in deaths and the cancellation of hundreds of flights.

A rare winter storm swept across the southern coast of the US, impacting Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and Georgia, according to a report by USA TODAY.

Heavy snowfalls and icy winds paralyzed transportation in Houston and New Orleans, where record breaking snowfall for the region — up to 20 cm.

In Houston, schools, some restaurants, and shops shut down, leaving streets practically empty. City authorities reported two fatalities, likely weather-related, one of which was a homeless person found frozen.

In New Orleans, local authorities urged residents to stay home to avoid the hazards of icy roads. Operations in ports and airports were suspended, with 960 flights canceled at Houston's airport alone.

Weather services warned of strong winds reaching 64 km/h, which could damage power lines and topple trees. As a result, 30,000 homes and businesses in Texas were left without electricity.

Local authorities set up warming centers in Alabama and Georgia. Meanwhile, northern parts of the US are experiencing extremely low temperatures, dropping to -39°C in Colorado.

According to forecasts, the snowstorm will persist until January 24, posing further threats to transportation and infrastructure.

Previously, it was reported that the Sunset Fire on the Hollywood Hills caused the evacuation of local residents, the closure of popular tourist attractions, and posed a threat to iconic Los Angeles landmarks.

It was also reported that the Kilauea volcano in Hawaii is erupting: while there is no direct threat to residents, scientists warn of potential health risks due to volcanic smog.
