Today, a meeting took place at the Chequers residence between the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom and the Chancellor of Germany, Olaf Scholz. The information was published on the UK Government's website.
The leaders discussed bilateral cooperation, the situation in Ukraine, and strengthening European defense.
During the conversation, they noted progress in relations between the two countries, achieved through agreements in defense and migration policy.
Particular attention was given to the situation in Ukraine. The Prime Minister spoke about his recent visit and emphasized the importance of maximizing Kyiv’s position to achieve peace through strength.
Both leaders agreed that Russia’s war against Ukraine requires increased and coordinated defense production in Europe.
The Prime Minister also stated that Britain would take into account the experience of the war in Ukraine and new threats from Moscow.
Additionally, the parties discussed the ceasefire between Israel and Gaza. They welcomed the release of hostages and highlighted the necessity of implementing all stages of the agreements.
On February 3, the Prime Minister will attend a meeting with EU leaders to strengthen the UK's relations with the European Union in the fields of economy and security.
The UK Prime Minister will also call on European leaders on February 3 to increase economic pressure on Russia.
During his visit to Brussels, he will emphasize the need for joint efforts to weaken the Russian economy, which is facing serious difficulties due to sanctions.
The main focus of his speech will be on rising inflation and surging interest rates in Russia, driven by war-related expenses. Sanctions against Russia’s shadow fleet and energy companies have already hit the oil industry: oil and gas revenues in 2024 have dropped by 29% compared to 2022.
According to the British Prime Minister, restrictive measures have increased transportation costs and taken a significant portion of Russian tankers out of operation. The UK has imposed sanctions on more than 2,100 Russian companies and individuals, including 100 vessels involved in oil transportation.
Earlier, it was reported that the UK would supply Ukraine with new air defense systems developed to meet its needs, while BAE Systems and Sheffield Forgemasters will resume artillery barrel production for the first time in 20 years. These measures are part of a £4.5 billion military aid package for Kyiv in 2025.
It has also been revealed that Germany is ready to join an international peacekeeping mission in Ukraine, but only after the end of Russian aggression and the establishment of a stable ceasefire.
