Seismic activity is intensifying on the Greek island of Santorini, forcing thousands of residents to leave their homes, according to Νέα Κρήτη.

Over the past three days, approximately 9,000 people have left the island by ferries and planes, fearing a potential major earthquake. Scientists have recorded hundreds of tremors, and authorities are implementing emergency safety measures.

The epicenter of the earthquakes is located near the islet of Anydros, about 20 kilometers from Santorini. The latest powerful tremor, with a magnitude of 5.0, was recorded on Tuesday afternoon.

Seismologists do not rule out the possibility of new strong tremors but are unable to provide an exact forecast for the situation's development.

Due to the seismic threat, schools on Santorini and four neighboring islands have been closed. Classes are expected to resume no earlier than Friday, February 7. Meanwhile, engineers have arrived on the island to inspect buildings, as many residents fear structural damage.

The situation is being discussed at an emergency meeting of the Greek Ministry of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection. Representatives of local authorities, law enforcement, and emergency services are participating. The primary goal is to coordinate actions in case of further deterioration.

According to Professor of Seismology Gerasimos Papadopoulos, the series of tremors could continue for a long time, but the main shock may have already occurred. However, some experts warn that earthquakes with magnitudes up to 6.5 are possible, which could lead to severe consequences.

In recent days, a strange rumbling sound has been heard on the Cyclades islands, which scientists attribute to the propagation of sound waves through the Earth's crust.

Some residents prefer to stay outdoors, fearing aftershocks. Authorities advise people to remain vigilant and follow further seismologists' updates.

Earlier, it was reported that a powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 7.3 struck off the coast of California, affecting thousands of people. Authorities declared a state of emergency, initiated evacuations and rescue operations, and issued a tsunami warning.

It was also reported that Taiwan experienced its strongest earthquake in 25 years, with a magnitude of 7.4, causing significant destruction in various areas of the island.
