On Wednesday, federal judge Deborah Boardman issued a ruling blocking Donald Trump’s executive order that revokes birthright citizenship, as reported by CNN.
According to her, the order "contradicts the 14th Amendment" as well as a 125-year-old Supreme Court precedent.
The executive order was signed by Trump on January 20, the day he took office. The document prohibits granting citizenship to children born in the U.S. to undocumented parents and foreign nationals temporarily present in the country.
Legal proceedings began almost immediately after the order was signed, and just days later, a court had already suspended its enforcement.
The plaintiffs in the case included five pregnant women whose children could have been affected by the order, along with two organizations advocating for migrant rights. The court ruled that the decision must have nationwide implications, as it impacts thousands of families.
Human rights activists welcomed Boardman’s ruling, stating that it would prevent "legal chaos" for families awaiting the birth of their children.
The Trump administration announced that it would appeal the decision in a circuit court, and the case is likely to reach the Supreme Court.
Legal experts note that Trump’s order contradicts the long-standing interpretation of the 14th Amendment, which affirms that anyone born on U.S. soil is a citizen of the country.
Judge Boardman emphasized that her decision was based on the Constitution, not political preferences.
Earlier, it was reported that Donald Trump proposed deploying U.S. troops to Gaza, resettling its residents, and building an "economic paradise" under U.S. control in place of the destroyed buildings.
It was also revealed that Spain responded to Donald Trump's false statement about its alleged inclusion in BRICS and his threat to impose 100% tariffs, which sparked widespread controversy.
