A heavy snowfall has hit western and northern regions of Japan, causing an abnormal increase in snow cover, according to NHK.

According to meteorologists, as of the morning of February 24, up to 17 centimeters of fresh snow had been recorded in Kyoto, Nagano, and Hiroshima prefectures over six hours, while in some areas, the snow cover exceeded 3.5 meters.

Mountainous areas have been the hardest hit, with snowfall levels three times higher than the seasonal average. In Shimane Prefecture, a record 49 centimeters of snow has been recorded.

Authorities warn of a high risk of avalanches and building collapses due to the increasing weight of snow on roofs.

Meteorologists expect further snowfall until the evening of February 25, especially in the Hokuriku, Chugoku, and Shikoku regions, where up to 30 centimeters of snow may accumulate within 24 hours.

Experts also warn of icy roads, potential power outages, and falling trees. Residents are advised to exercise caution, avoid unstable structures, and clear snow under safe conditions.

Earlier, it was reported that record-breaking cold was recorded in Poland, with temperatures in the Tatra Mountains dropping to -41.13°C, the lowest of the season.

Additionally, a rare winter storm struck the southern United States, covering 31 million people with snow and ice, causing casualties, transportation disruptions, and mass flight cancellations.
